Where to buy last minute Colosseum tickets?

I was held up with a lot of work and couldn’t book in advance, so I am looking for last-minute Colosseum tickets now. Can I buy on the day of my visit? Where should I try first – the ticket counter, third-party sites, or the official website?

You can try the onsite ticket office at Piazza del Colosseo for same-day entry. But availability isn’t guaranteed, especially during the peak months of May to September. Slots are first-come, first-served. If morning slots are gone, you might only find late-afternoon entry (that’s if you are lucky!!) and you may have to wait till its your time to enter. It’s a gamble that can mean waiting hours.

Re-sellers such as GetYourGuide or Tiqets sometimes have Colosseum tours available till the last moment. It’s the quickest way to grab something late. But be ready to pay a small premium.

The most reliable way is to book on the official website of Parco archeologico del Colosseo. When I visited with my partner, we found out that the site releases tickets 30 days in advance. I know… this doesn’t help you today, but it’s the best route if you have even a little time before your visit.

If you are looking for the tickets at the eleventh hour, don’t be too picky. Travel aggregators sell Colosseum tickets under many names. Just ensure the “last-minute” entry ticket you buy includes three things: priority entrance to the Colosseum, access to the 2nd and 3rd floors, and entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Travel aggregators offer tickets that you can cancel up to 24 hours before your visit. This is one area where they are better than the official site. That’s why it is always a good idea to book in advance, even if your plans are not finalized. If your plans change, you can always cancel your tickets.

If you didn’t plan ahead, you may not get the Colosseum Underground tickets or the Night Tour tickets. When I visited with my parents, we missed visiting the Underground for the same reason. As soon as these premium tickets are available, they sell out because they grant access to every section. My advice: stick to standard entry or tours that still have inventory.

If you’re trying your luck in person, be at the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill entrance (close to Via di San Gregorio) as soon as the attraction opens. You will get the same Colosseum tickets, but won’t waste time standing in line because the lines here are shorter than those at the main Colosseum gate. Once you’ve got the tickets, you can decide to see the Colosseum first or the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill.

During high season, walking up to the ticket counter to buy tickets at the last minute can be risky. Daily tickets follow timed entry. During our visit, we didn’t get the morning slots, and the whole day sold out by early afternoon (we did manage to get the tickets, though). Whichever tour you find at the last minute, grab it, because only 3000 tourists can be inside at a time, which keeps demand high.

Quick summary of options:
  • Option 1 (In-person): Try the onsite office for same-day slots—no guarantees.
  • Option 2 (Third-party): Check big booking sites; faster but pricier.
  • Option 3 (Official online): Best if you have time; tickets release up to 30 days ahead at 08:45 (Rome).
If you can plan even a little, book early to avoid the last-minute scramble.
