Things to know

Here are some important things to know about the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Opening hours: The Vatican Museums are open every day from 8 am to 7 pm, with extended hours until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays.

The Colosseum is open daily from 8:30 am to 7:15 pm.

Distance: The Vatican Museum is located 6.5 km (4 miles) away from the Colosseum.

Transport: To get from the Colosseum to the Vatican, you have a couple of easy options. The subway trains run every 10 minutes from Colosseo station to Cipro station near the Vatican, with a transfer at Termini station. Bus Line 87 and Line 81 both travel from the Colosseum to the Vatican.

Tips

  • The Vatican requires a strict dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women.
  • When you visit the Colosseum, remember to bring enough water and wear comfortable shoes, as this attraction requires a lot of walking.
  • The names of the participants should match their ID or passport to the names given while booking the tour.
  • On Wednesdays, the tour doesn’t visit St. Peter’s Basilica due to an audience blessing being held there. Instead, it will cover other areas of the Vatican Museums in place of the Basilica.
  •  Arrive early to pass through mandatory security screenings at both locations.
  • The best time to visit is in the mornings, when the attractions are less crowded, especially the Vatican Museums.
  • Both sites attempt to accommodate visitors with mobility issues but they are not fully wheelchair-friendly. The Vatican Museums have some wheelchair-accessible routes, and the Colosseum has an elevator to upper levels, but certain areas may pose challenges. It’s advisable to check with the tour provider for detailed accessibility information and alternative routes.
